Pierre Gonon is one of the most important producers in all of Saint-Joseph, as his strong advocacy for non-interventionist farming has made waves across the appellation. He ferments all of his juice in open oak vats and punchdowns are done by foot.
‘Les Iles Feray’ is partially destemmed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged for 10 months in old demi-muids, creating a juicy and easy-drinking Syrah that’s approachable in its youth. This whole-cluster fermented (around 60%) Syrah is layered flavors of red cherries, licorice, bacon fat, and smoke lead to a lasting and mineral-laden finish. Serve slightly chilled, light up the grill, and get ready to salivate.
